Diploma in Paralegal Studies

The Diploma in Paralegal Training, a partnership program with RHT Law and Training Vision Institute, prepares participants for a career in a legal environment with critical skills to negotiate and advocate in specialised fields. This diploma is specially designed to prepare participants to function as qualified Paralegals and for those who wish to further their careers in a legal environment. Guided by experienced practising lawyers, this course equips participants with the knowledge of law and critical skills to negotiate and advocate in specialised fields. Participants will be trained to be problem-solvers and innovation thinkers to embark on an intellectually challenging career as a Paralegal.

Programme Fees

The Diploma in Legal Studies programme covers fundamental aspects of law and legal systems in Singapore. Modules cover criminal and civil litigation procedures, family law, company and partnership law, and intellectual property law, among others. Students will learn the basic principles of taxation, corporate secretarial practice, and the entire conveyancing transaction. The programme aims to prepare students for a wide range of career paths, including working in law firms, legal departments of corporations, government agencies, and non-profit organisations.

Module 1. Legal Fundamentals

This is an essential core module which introduces students to the concept of law and the legal system in Singapore. The module also includes an overview of legal contracts that will help students learn drafting approaches to ensure contract utility and enforceability. Students will also learn the fundamentals relating to the Law of Tort, and to have the ability to identify and solve legal problems arising from a civil context.

Module 2. Criminal Law

In this module, students will learn about the different aspects of criminal litigation, from arrest to appeal. Students will be exposed to the Criminal Procedure Code, Evidence Act and relevant cases which encapsulate the essential rules parties need to know to conduct a criminal litigation Admission Criteria

Module 3. Civil Procedure

This module aims to educate students about the entire litigation process, from commencing a suit through Writ of Summons or Originating Summons to the Post-Judgment stage of enforcing the Judgment. The module will focus mainly on the Rules of Court and Supreme Court Practice Directions where it set out the rules governing any civil proceedings going through the Court system.

Module 4. Family Law

Educating students about Women’s Charter and relevant case law governing marriages and divorces-related matters such as maintenance of wife and children, and division of matrimonial assets. Through this module, students will be taught on the procedure of commencing matrimonial proceedings and the necessary documents to be filed to obtain the decree nisi.

Module 5. Company and Partnership

Students will be taught on the basic accounting principles for company and partnerships and be exposed to Legal Profession (Solicitors’ Accounts) Rules where it sets out the required accounts a law firm must have and how a law firm should deal with clients’ monies in the various accounts under different circumstances.

6. Conveyancing Law & Procedure

The basic law and legal concepts governing real property in Singapore will be covered in this module. Through this module, students will be taught on the entire conveyancing transaction, from option to purchase to completion. Procedures for the purchase of Strata Land Title property as well as Land Title property will be covered. Students will then be able to understand the importance of following the strict timelines and adhere to the same in practice.

Module 7. Preparing Bills for Taxation

This module introduces students to the concept of taxation and its underlying principles. Learn how to submit relevant bills for taxation as per the Rules of Court.

Module 8. Corporate Secretarial Practice

Basic company law will be covered to provide students with an overview of essential sections in the Companies Act regulating and governing companies incorporated in Singapore. Role and duties of a corporate secretary will be taught. Corporate governance and compliance will also be covered where students will be taught on the applicable laws and rules a company ought to/should adopt regarding corporate governance and compliance

Module 9. Intellectual Property Law

This module provides students with an overview of the various intellectual property (IP) rights in Singapore. Students will be introduced to the topics of Copyrights, Patents, Trade Marks, Trade Secrets and Confidential Information

Academic Minimum Entry Requirement:

  • Obtained at least C6 at GCE ‘O’ Level in at least 3 subjects, including English Language; or
  • Obtained IB Diploma; or
  • Obtained Pre-university qualifications; or
  • Mature candidate who is at least 30 years of age with 5 years’ working experience.

Local Students:

  • Obtained at least C6 at GCE ‘O’ Level in at least 3 subjects, including English Language; or
  • Mature candidate who is at least 30 years of age with 8 years’ working experience.
  • International (STP) Students: (Newly Added)
  • Completed 12 years of schooling; or completed high school in the country of origin; and
  • Attained 18 years of age or more; or
  • Obtained IB Diploma.

Language Requirement:

  • Obtained at least C6 in GCE ‘O’ Level English Language; or
  • Obtained WPL Level 6 (Average of Reading Listening, Speaking & Wiring Scores); or
  • Obtained IELTS 5.5 or equivalent (Applicable for International (STP) Students); or
  • Passed successfully TVI English Admission Test.

Other qualifications can be considered for entry, if they are deemed to be equivalent and will have to be approved by Director, Central Academic Division (CAD) in TVI.

Each level may be assessed by any combination of written assessment, projects and oral interviews.

The mode of delivery will be a combination of lectures, workshops, group discussions, individual activities, experiential learning with a 1:20 teacher and student ratio.

1. Singaporeans and Permanent Residents have to meet the following conditions to be eligible for SSG fund, failing which the participant will be liable to pay the full course fees to Training Vision Institute.

a) Met minimum 75% in attendance and in E-learning hours

b) Qualify as Competent in all WSQ Assessments

c) Met other SSG eligibility criteria

2. Singapore Citizens can use their SkillsFuture Credit (SFC) to offset the course fee after subsidies.

3. Participant with Post-Secondary Education Account (PSEA) can apply to use the PSEA fund for the course fee.

4. Fee Protection Scheme (FPS) are not included. A non-refundable application fee of $54 for local students and $216 for international students will apply.
